So You Want A Dachshund Puppy

Dachshund puppies are an excellent choice for family pets. The dachshund is affectionate, lively, curious and some say somewhat mischievous. Miniature dachshunds make good companions, whether you live in a small city apartment or in the country. They are equally happy in either setting. The Dachshund is naturally free from "doggie" odor.

The miniature Dachshund requires minimal routine brushing to keep their coats healthy and in good condition. The longhair / longhaired and wirehaired dachshund may require extra grooming or periodic help from a professional.

Longhaired Dachshunds

Longhaired dachshunds have shiny, sleek hair that is longer under the neck and on the chest, the underside of the body, on the ears, and behind the legs, with the longest hair usually on the tail where it forms a "flag". Longhaired puppies are born with short hair and starts getting longer about 2-3 weeks. It takes 2-3 years to get a full coat.The longhair dachshund is generally more laid back than the other two varieties.

Shorthaired Dachshunds

Shorthaired dachshunds should have a short, smooth and shining coat.

Wirehaired Dachshunds

The wirehaired dachshund is covered with a uniform tight, short, thick, rough outer coat with finer, somewhat softer, shorter hairs (undercoat) scattered between the coarser hairs, with the exception of the jaws, eyebrows, and ears where the distinctive facial furnishings include a beard and eyebrows. The wire-haired Dachshund is more outgoing and clown-like than the other two varieties.
